Every test carries a fixed coach standard as its fallback ruler — and wherever published age data exists, we grade against your player's actual age instead. That's the next section.
Age changes everything.
55 mph off the mound is a completely different fact at 9 than at 14. So we don't grade every kid on one scale — we grade against published data for players their age.
The same 55 mph lands near the top of the curve for 9-year-olds — and behind typical for 14-year-olds. Same ball, same radar gun, two different stories. The engine plots every measurement on the curve for your player's exact age before it says a word about how good it is.
Measure
One number, measured the same way every time — a time, a distance, a velocity.
Place it on the age curve
Each norm publishes a typical value and spread per age. We interpolate between published ages for your player's exact age — never between percentiles.
Read the percentile
The normal curve turns the gap between your player and the age average into a percentile, always capped between 1 and 99.

No mystery datasets. Every age curve in the engine is transcribed from a named public study or standard and carries that citation with it.
Large, well-matched published data. You see the exact percentile — “Top 18% of 11U.”
Good data with estimation involved. You see an honest band — “≈ top 20–30%” — never false precision. Confidence also drops a tier automatically where a dataset thins out with age.
Thin or extrapolated data. You see words, not a number.
We don’t age-grade. The metric falls back to the fixed coach benchmarks where those exist, clearly labeled — and otherwise is tracked as a raw number over time. We never print an invented percentile.
Two more guards run on every reading: a player is never scored against an age cohort they're far outside of, and every norm carries physical sanity bounds — an impossible value (a mistyped 10-yard dash under 1.0 s, a youth grip reading over 200 lb) is rejected instead of scored, so a typo can't become a headline.
From number to rating.
Percentiles are precise but cold. The dashboard translates them onto one honest ladder so a 10-year-old (and their parent) knows exactly where they stand.
Every rung is earned by your player's age-graded standing. The exact boundaries between rungs are part of the coaching recipe, so we keep them in-house — your dashboard always shows the rung, the standing behind it, and a school-style letter grade for each DNA attribute on the monthly report card. When a metric isn't age-graded, it's rated straight against the coach benchmarks instead — and coming in below the mark is honestly labeled Developing, never hidden.
One score, ten attributes.
The Dev Score (0–100) is the average of your player's Player DNA — five athletic attributes and five baseball attributes. Nothing is padded: an attribute with no data yet simply doesn't count until it's measured or coach-rated.

Measured attributes are scored from the benchmark rating each test earns (the age-graded standing is shown alongside every metric) — Speed from the five sprint and agility times, Hitting from exit velocity, Throwing from arm velocity. Coach-ratedattributes are the ones a stopwatch can't judge: Baseball IQ, Defense, Coordination. Base Running is deliberately coach-rated too — it's instincts and reads, and reusing the sprint times there would double-count speed in the overall score. Coaches can override any value when they know something the numbers don't — but the "since joining" progress delta is always computed from measured results only, so an override can never rewrite history.

The dashboard names the biggest limiter — the lowest-scoring attribute — and lessons aim straight at it.

When we don't have the data, we say so.
No invented percentiles — ever. When the published data doesn't cover a player's age (exit-velocity norms start at 14U, for example), a 13-year-old is graded against that youngest cohort and clearly marked as an estimate at reduced confidence — and a younger player falls back to the fixed coach benchmark instead of a made-up ranking. Medium-confidence scores show as a band, not fake precision. Impossible readings get rejected, not celebrated. Many programs never say where their numbers come from. This page exists so you never have to wonder.
The first measurement is the map.
